The nice thing about these illos is the simplicity. I think many modern illos get a little too caught up in the textures and all the fiddly bits, and lose out on the impact of simple lines and shadows. I don't think fantasy animals/monsters should look any more complicated than the real animals outside. Grounding them in a bit of reality (not too much) makes them all the more horrible.
And a tail stinger. Can't forget that :)
