Since the beginning there have been complaints about it, but no better system has yet been devised.

Alright, that's a pretty strong stance. That's my opinion on the matter.

I am still fascinated by alternate methods, and have yet to see a Spell Point system I'm fully convinced is better than classic D&D Vancian magic.

Here is an idea that is perhaps one of the simplest expressions of a spell point system, it is somewhat half way between Vancian and Spell Points.

You get X levels of spells to cast per day. X is your character's level + modifiers (ie. INT 14/+1)

A 1st level caster could cast a 1st level spell.

A 3rd level caster could cast a 3rd level spell, or three 1st level spells, or a 1st level and a 2nd level.

This does give access to higher level spells before classic D&D does, but I think at a cost that somewhat balances it. You could add some sort of exhaustion system to further balance it, but I haven't fully thought that out yet.

Thomas Denmarkhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06135075012362548876noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3094065222299992956.post-8384229419464019362024-03-06T06:30:00.000-08:002024-03-06T14:06:43.366-08:00Wizard Tower of Deth Daekas

Deth Daekas was the student of an Eldritch Lord, but he never achieved the level of proficiency as his master. And judging by the DM's Guide and Unearthed Arcana Gary enjoyed making up new ways. Ultimately my favorite method is 3d6 in order, no altering. However, today it struck me to add one option to that: swap any 2. This gives just a bit of autonomy to the player to create the character he or she wants, while maintaining the rigidness of 3d6 in order.

This thought led me to wondering if it would be possible to boil all the methods of rolling scores down to their essence. And then I wrote this up:

A. Roll them:

1. Roll in order.

2. Choose where to put them.

B. Roll:

1. 3d6.

2. 4d6, drop lowest.

3. Standard array, choose a set and place them. No rolling.

4. Point buy. No rolling.

C. Alter:

1. No altering (you get what you get).

2. Swap any 2 rolls (ie. a high CHR for a low CON).

3. Subtract 2 from one to add 1 to another.

Standard Arrays

“Hero:” 8, 10, 11, 12, 14, 16

“Generalist:” 9, 10, 11, 12, 14, 15

“Specialist:” 6, 8, 9, 14, 15, 17

Point Buy

All ability scores start at 6, you get X points to add where you want them. Max 18 in any 1.

Low Power Level: X = 18

Mid Power Level: X = 24

High Power Level: X = 40

Thomas Denmarkhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06135075012362548876noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3094065222299992956.post-33957699174211451202024-02-14T12:08:00.000-08:002024-02-14T12:17:54.581-08:00Guardians Revised Playtest
For a little over a year now David Pulver and I have been working on a revised version of Guardians. I'm still amazed that Guardians is a Gold best seller on DriveThru. The intent was to make a supers RPG that was as close to the original edition as possible, but this obviously required a lot of new game mechanics and material that weren't in the original. So characters came out a bit like Gamma World, in that they start out with strong powers. Some have compared it to Villains & Vigilantes, a game I'm not very familiar with beyond the ads in old Dragon magazines.

At any rate, I've been collecting as much feedback, comments, and suggestions over the years on the game as I could find. Just yesterday I found a great super-harsh critique. What's so great about a bad review you might wonder? Well, they're the best! It provides honest feedback that can help improve a product.

Here are a few highlights from that critique:

We found the character creation to be a bit clunky and vague and it took forever.

Some powers seemed to be more powerful than other powers. I understand this isn't exactly a 'balanced' game in a modern rpg sense so that's fine but it just didn't seem consistent.

Starting characters get SO MANY POWERS/GIFTS/GADGETS AND three hit dice at first level. This makes the game incompatible with other White Box/OSR games and undermines one of the key selling features: compatibility with other OSR games.

Powers and Features need cleaning up and rewording in a more generic "effect-based" manner that reminds the players to create some kind of justification for the power.

The knee jerk reaction could be to get defensive, but but...and explain away the problems. Instead of asking yourself how can character creation be less clunky? How can we make the balance more consistent? It will never be balanced, it is a superhero RPG, they are never balanced despite claims to the contrary, but can it be more cogent? How can it be even more compatible with White Box? Could the Powers be reworded better?

And that is what we are trying to do. Not change the game, it has been far more successful than I expected, but how can we clean up the verbiage and tighten up the game to make it better?

And the most significant update is the art. It is crammed full of much higher quality art, while hopefully still feeling somewhat "silver age".

This is all leading up to an invitation to you. Please join us in playtesting and critiquing the Revised Edition to make it even better. You can be part of this by joining the Forum and sending an IM to the admin requesting to join the Guardians Playtest. This creature is made entirely of an animated pumpkin, carved with a sinister, glowing face. The central eye casts an eerie orange light in its vicinity, while the ten smaller stalks, each bearing a squash, radiate out from its body, swaying with malevolent intent. The smell of burning candles and rotting vegetable matter accompanies its presence.

Habitat & Society:

Pumpkin Beholders are rare and are often associated with places of dark magic or cursed lands, especially those linked to the spirit of Halloween. They might be found guarding ancient Halloween relics or terrorizing villages that have forgotten the old ways of All Hallows' Eve.

Ecology:

These creatures do not eat or drink in the traditional sense. Instead, they draw sustenance from the fear and magic of the lands they inhabit. If a Pumpkin Beholder is slain, its body decomposes rapidly, leaving behind seeds that, if planted, can grow into regular pumpkins. However, legends say that on the night of Halloween, these pumpkins can come to life, hinting at the possible return of the Pumpkin Beholder.

Thomas Denmarkhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06135075012362548876noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3094065222299992956.post-924175508660939222023-10-05T10:50:00.006-07:002023-10-05T14:54:02.199-07:00Gunslinger KS Edition Pre-Orders
A limited number of pre-orders of the Kickstarter edition of Gunslinger are now available.

Gunslinger RPG Pre-Order

This edition includes color inside covers and the introductory adventure On The Arizona Hills inspired by the classic Sword & Planet novel by ERB.
